The East Troy High School Tech Integration Squad, affectionately known as the East Troy Geek Squad, is slowly but surely spreading its love for technology across the community.
The group of eight tech savvy high school students was formed to provide technical support to teachers and students.
Projects range from helping students create websites and developing screencast tutorials to showing teachers how to integrate the most useful tech tools into their curriculum.
The squad got official status in 2012 when the East Troy Community School District Board of Education agreed to give members credit for their work at ETHS.
The group, advised by teacher Claudia Felske, has expanded its goal (to help students and teachers learn and love technology) to the greater East Troy community.
Aside from helping teachers and students at school, the group also does community outreach each month at “Ask a Geek” sessions.
Community members are invited to come in (smart phones, tablets, laptops in tow) to learn new technology skills and get their questions answered.
“‘Ask a Geek’ started when we were joking one day about how our relatives and neighbors all seem to have a list of tech questions for us every time we see them,” Felske said. “We all had this same experience and realized that there are a lot of people out there with tech questions that we could answer.”
Tailored to the personal requests and needs of individuals in attendance, sessions take place from 9-11 a.m. the first Saturday of every month in Room 119 at East Troy High School, 3128 Graydon Ave., and are free and open to the public. No appointments necessary.
Community members are welcome to bring their smart phones, laptops, tablets, and technology questions. Members of the East Troy High School Geek Squad will be present to help.
